The move ends a nearly five-decade association of Surrey with The Beatles, which began in 1965 – when accountants devised a scheme to ensure their wealth would accumulate.

Brian Epstein wanted all the Beatles to live (as neighbours) in the Surrey stockbroker belt also known as the Beverly Hills of Britain. Only Paul resisted the temptation – preferring to stay in London.

The Starrs are likely to settle permanently in California once Rydinghurst is sold.

The estate, near Cranleigh, Surrey will go on sale this week.
